TECH: Touchable Holograms

This is frakking Star Trek.

Researchers at Tokyo University have come up with a technology that is a first and significant step away from the mouse and keyboard —  touchable holograms. The technology consists of software that uses ultrasonic waves to create pressure on the hand of a user touching the projected hologram.

"Up until now, holography has been for the eyes only, and if you’d try to touch it, your hand would go right through," said Hiroyuki Shinoda, Professor, and lead researcher at Tokyo University. "But now we have a technology that also adds the sensation of touch to holograms."

Oh, and guess how they implemented their prototype? By using a Wii controller. Yeah, very geeky. Check out the video above. The applications are endless.

[Oh, I got some applications in mind. Bunka-Bunka-Wow-Bunka-Wow-Wow. Heh, heh. — Tann]

Back to your basement, Tann.

So we are moving away from reality all together now? Cool stuff and I agree no need to new interfaces if we slip to one. Add auto translation of written itemsa nd you ahve a universal interface, on the face of it… Now back to the Holodeck at Dell
