One a day might just keep the HIV away

If there was a once-a-day pill that would prevent infection from HIV, would you take it? That’s not just a hypothetical question. New research released this past week indicates that the drugs tenofovir and emtricitabine, packaged together and sold as Truvada, reduced new HIV infections from 44 %to 73%.

“This is a huge step forward,” says lead researcher Robert Grant, at the J. David Gladstone Institute at the University of California-San Francisco, a non-profit research foundation that carried out the study.

Incredibly huge. Consistent, daily use of the Truvada pill provided a shield against HIV that was effective 3/4 of the time. That’s a remarkable achievement in the fight against AIDS.

HIV infection rates are roughly the same today as they were at the start of the epidemic. Young people, especially, wind up getting hit with the life changing virus. It would be great if we could get 100% condom / safer sex compliance, but I just don’t see that happening. I also don’t see 100% compliance with taking this medicine daily,  in evry case. But even a substatntial compliance rate with this medicine, among those who consistenly use prodtection and those who don’t, could go a long way to making this damn virus a thing of the past.
