I Think I Got This Right….

The Intrepid Reedy, writing code.

This was a bit more like BATTLESTAR GALACTICA than I thought.

The other week, as I’m sure you all are aware, we moved doorQ.com to a new code base, retiring the original format and operating system and migrating everything to the newer, fancier, Word Press system. That wasn’t easy: exporting, converting and importing the data from the original setup into the new was a ball-buster. While most everyone made the jump safely, we did leave a few stragglers behind, folks who we are only just now managing to reintegrate into the fold.

It took a few days to get all the kinks worked out, but I was happy we’d found a new home, a bright, shiny planet on which to rebuild and grow. Except it didn’t work out like that. As many of you noted, we never quite got every kink worked out. Something was always still giving a random error, mostly revealed as those 404-shouty angry pages every time you tried to do something major. We were still trying to run the site on a server that just wasn’t quite right for it. (For those of you technical folks, we were running PHP in IIS, with WP on a multi-site install. The .htaccess never could quite configure correctly.) There just wasn’t the expertise in my circle of friends to fix the problem, so yesterday we made the jump to a new home once again…

Several of you emailed to ask what was up with the site — we went down around fourteen-thirty local time and didn’t come back up until almost nineteen-thirty — after getting the always informative “maintenance message” when you stopped in. We reset everything up on a server far more amenable to the native code behind the new site. No process in a process in a process. Everything should now be much more direct. But getting that to run took far more time than anticipated.

I can’t take any credit for making that happen, though. Reedy has been the brains behind all of this. He’s had to wrestle with every demon, dragon, ghost, monster and Giant Robot of Doom that crawled out of the nether-night with each install, tweak and code change. Configuring settings between the server, the operating system and the program wasn’t easy — which remained quite apparent with every scream, pounding, whinge and curse on the parentage of the coding team behind WordPress that escaped Reedy’s lips. But since the man is a Supra-Genius with a very big sword — make of that what you will — everything is, at last, finally, working right.

Big thanks to Sam for the multi-month process involved in getting us here, and many, many thanks to all of you wonderful readers for bearing with doorQ.com as we finally found a home that’s just right for everything everyone wants to do.

Thanks guys. Now I just need to spread the word that we’re back and better than before. If I can get a bit more activity, we might just reach the critical mass necessary to make the forums / groups thrive and the chat program more than a giant, open, empty meeting room. 😀

    Maybe I need more penises….

Chad, email me at jody@doorq.com. I’ll see what happened to your old account and what to do about resigning in. We had some hiccups in the data migration that couldn’t be helped by the computer. I, as the great and grand DoorQusMaximus, can work miracles. At least around here.
