STAR TREK THE ANIMATED SERIES returns!

Sure, all of this 3-D CGI animation is awesome and all, but how about some old school Filmmation flat, limited motion moving pictures? Of the Star Trek variety?

CBS.Com is now showing the 1973 animated Trek series. Featuring the original cast in quasi canonical adventures, the series is famous for first depicting the always-malfunctioning holodeck and depicting the crew’s second encounter with the tribbles, in David Gerrold’s “More Tribbles, More Troubbles.”

This series was famous for anything? I had always been led to believe that the original animated series of Star Trek was the Snakes On A Plane for that universe: downright awful to watch but you can’t turn away…

Nope. While the animation wasn’t great — Flimmation was known for their “bargain basement” animation techniques — the stories for many of the episodes were really quite good. Even though they had to keep things kid friendly and under a half-hour, freed from the budget restraints of the regular series, they were able to tell some pretty cool stories. Check out “The Slaver Weapon” episode by Larry Niven.

Niven introduced his Kzinti to the Trek universe. The mesh works really well and makes for a very entertaining episode.
