Are you a wonder, Wonder Woman?

David E. Kelly’s version of WONDER WOMAN is set to debut later this year, but the new costume that series star Adrianne Palicki will be wearing has already been revealed. The new costume is along the lines of the current comic-book version of the outfit, with long pants replacing the classic swim-suit.

Like the rebooted comic, the TV series departs from the classic origin of the character, with this version of Princess Diana not only being the super hero familiar to countless gay boys everywhere, but also the head of a multi-billion dollar company, Themyscira Industries AND secretly Diana Prince. It’s going to be interesting to see how all of that works out.

What are your thoughts on the costume? Between the original, the rebooted comic version and this one, I’d have to say that the new comics version looks a bit cooler. There’s something about the blue pants that don’t look as good as the revamped black ones.

However, I don’t have a dog in this fight. I’m not in love with Wonder Woman like so many of my friends are.

In another of the endless ways I’m queer for a queer, I don’t particularly identify with Wonder Woman. I’m not all that bothered by either version of the costume. Doorq that I am, I’m excited to see the new TV series, though. David Kelly has pulled off some great writing over the years. Wonder Woman is an awesome character — especially when she’s flying on her own power and trading blows (and kisses) with Superman — so if the series does a great job with writing and production values (and doesn’t pull a SMALLVILLE), it’ll find a spot in my weekly Tivo to-do list.

Update: Tumbling Through Life Updated the color a bit on her costume. Much better.

  1. Wait…this is for real? I’ve seen this image before, but I assumed someone grabbed it off the packaging of Walmart’s Wonder Woman costume kit.

Nope. That’s the Official Image of the Official Costume. I’m glad I’m not a huge fan of the WW, or else I’d think the costume was silly looking, a bad choice and, with all the doorQs in Hollywood that live and breathe Wonder Woman, they could have done a much better creative job.

  3. I’m thinking that the costume alone will put a lot of people off, regardless of the level of their love for Wonder Woman. I mean…it’s just campy, and I don’t think there’s a way around that. An attempt to do a serious superhero drama will surely be undercut by the couture, and an intentionally campy, comedic take will just be kind of weird. I do hope the show’s creators find a way to make it work, but it’s gonna be a tough sell.

All that said, I think Tumbling Through Life’s costume adjustments are a marked improvement. It doesn’t solve the underlying camp issue, but it does somewhat diminish it. Again, I hope it all works out. I loves me some genre TV, and while there will never be another Lynda Carter, I’d like to make room for another Wonder Woman.

  4. This should be the costume:

Uncertain who designed it, but it’s far superior to the plastic-looking piece above top-left, and far better than the one at the right which makes WW look like any chick heading out to a NYC club on a Friday night…circa 2001 (and less the shiny bracelets and lasso).
