'Safety Not Guaranteed' director to helm 'Jurassic Park IV'

colin

After ten years of stop-and-go on whether Universal Studios would make a fourth film in the Jurassic Park franchise, in January they announced a release date and now, after much speculation, have settled on Colin Trevorrow to direct it. Trevorrow made his feature directorial debut with the Sundance hit Safety Not Guaranteed and that  quickly got him dumped into the same hat many other directors found themselves in after Disney announced Star Wars: Episode VII. Then rumor broke after that that Disney was going to have him write and direct a remake of The Flight of the Navigator.

jurassicparkivWhether that film is going to still happen now that Universal and producer Frank Marshall have confirmed the hiring of Trevorrow for Jurassic Park IV is unknown. Since 2001, when the last film came out to disappointing box office ($180 million) along with both critical and audience negativity (50% on Rotten Tomatoe), Universal put the franchise in cold storage, though beginning in 2003, they began planning a fourth film. The problem was…whatever issue the studio had, as they brought in Oscar winners William Monahan and John Sayles to pen scripts. But there had been the sense that additionally the winds went out of their sails when both novelist Michael Crichton and famed creature designer Stan Winston died in the those years as well.  Then in June of 2012, Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who wrote the hugely successful Rise of the Planet of the Apes, were hired to write the film. Six months later, Universal announced June 13, 2014 release date for the third sequel.

But who would direct? When Steven Spielberg put his next film, Robopocalypse, on hold, speculation over the net seemed to indicate that he could return. But now that goes the way of every rumor with Trevorrow’s signing. Spielberg and Marshall will produce (his wife, Kathleen Kennedy dropped out to concentrate on the new Star Wars trilogy).
